Abstract

The construction sector generates large volumes of concrete waste, including prefabricated elements that result from products discarded due to deterioration during handling or failure to comply with technical manufacturing standards. In order to contribute to mitigating the negative effects on the environment caused by the dumping of construction waste and debris, the technical feasibility of using granular material obtained from the crushing of precast concrete elements, such as blocks and paving stones, as fine aggregate in the manufacture of new precast elements was evaluated. The physical properties of the recycled fine aggregate were determined, and concrete mixtures were prepared, with partial replacement of the conventional aggregate by recycled fine aggregate. The results indicate that in mixtures containing recycled aggregate, compressive strength is reduced by up to 15 % compared to mixtures containing conventional aggregate at 14 days of age.
