Author Guidelines

Articles Submitted for Review

These guidelines describe the basic stylistic requirements that scientific articles and/or working papers submitted for review must meet in order to be considered for publication in the Review of Economic Sciences (RCE-UAM).

General Aspects

 Scientific articles and/or working papers submitted to RCE-UAM must be prepared using Word or another text editor (e.g., LaTeX). Upon acceptance for publication, manuscripts must be formatted according to the journal’s LaTeX template, which will be provided by the editorial team.

First Page

 Manuscripts must be prepared in Letter size (8.5 × 11 inches). The text should be formatted in Arial, 12-point font, with single spacing. Margins must be set to 2 cm on the left and right and 3 cm on the top and bottom. Pages must be numbered consecutively, beginning with page 1, following the title and abstract pages. Submissions must not exceed 10,000 words or 25 pages (whichever comes first), including the title page, abstract, introduction, main body, conclusions, references, and any appendices.

The first page must include the following information: the title of the document; authors’ names (in bold); authors’ institutional affiliations (in italics); the date (month and year); an abstract in both Spanish and English (highlighting the paper’s main contributions and limited to a maximum of 200 words); JEL classification codes (a minimum of one and a maximum of three, in accordance with the Journal of Academic Literature classification); and keywords (a minimum of three and a maximum of five). Authors’ email addresses must be provided as footnotes to their names. Acknowledgments and disclaimers should be included as a footnote to the document title. A separate cover page and/or a table of contents must not be included.

Main Body of the Document

 The main body of the manuscript must be organized into clearly defined sections and subsections. Sections should be numbered using Arabic numerals, beginning with 1. Introduction. Subsequent sections, subsections, and sub-subsections should follow a hierarchical numbering system (e.g., 2; 2.1; 2.1.1). The basic structure of the manuscript should include:

  1. Introduction;
  2. Literature Review;
  3. Methodological Aspects;
  4. Results; and
  5. Conclusions

Sections may be added or removed as appropriate. All in-text citations of articles (linked to the bibliography), as well as references to formulas, URLs, tables, and figures, must be clearly distinguished in blue and formatted according to the Harvard referencing style. A complete list of references, also following the Harvard format, must be included after the Conclusions section. Where applicable, an Appendices section should be added thereafter.

Tables and Figures

 Tables and figures should be labeled as “Table” and “Figure,” respectively, and numbered consecutively using Arabic numerals. Each table or figure must include a brief and precise title placed at the top. Whenever possible, tables and figures—whether presented in the main text or in the appendices—should also include a clarifying “Note” providing a concise explanation. The “Source” of the information should be indicated below the note.

Although no strict limit is imposed, authors are advised to include no more than five tables and eight figures in the manuscript. All tables and figures must fit within the manuscript margins. Figures may consist of single or multiple graphs, provided they are arranged horizontally. Footnotes and explanatory notes for tables and figures should be presented in the default footnote font size.

Preferably, figures included in the text should employ neutral colors, such as black and shades of gray. When appropriate, variations of blue may also be used. All text within figures must be rendered in black or shades of black. It is recommended that the font used in figures be either Garamond or Times New Roman, with the text size adjusted appropriately to the dimensions of each figure. Simple figures, consisting of a single graph, should ideally have dimensions of 8–10 cm in height and 10–13 cm in width. For maps or other larger figures, the dimensions may be determined at the researcher’s discretion, provided that they fit within the document margins.

Equations

 If the document includes equations, as is customary in economics publications, they should be centered and numbered.

Appendices

 Tables included in the appendices should be labeled sequentially as 'Table A1', 'Table A2', and so forth. Similarly, figures in the appendices should be designated as 'Figure A1', 'Figure A2', and so on".

Additional Considerations

As an additional consideration, before submitting the document for evaluation by the Review of Economic Sciences, it is recommended that the text be thoroughly proofread, including the use of spelling and grammar tools.

Submission Preparation Checklist

All submissions must meet the following requirements.

  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.
